LESSON 2: AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS ARE MIGRATING, BUT EARLIER THIS SUMMER, WE CAUGHT THEM FORAGING FOR BREAKFAST AT THE LAKE.

As many as twelve American White Pelicans have vacationed at Sloan’s Lake all summer long, and we’ve loved seeing them during our morning walks. But now that it’s September, they’re migrating to warmer places like California, the Gulf States, and Mexico. We miss them already!

Did you know:

• As you can see in our video, American White Pelicans help each other out when they’re feeding. They swim together to “herd” the fish, so they can scoop them up easily.
• American White Pelicans can walk by the age of three weeks, and if they can walk to water, they can swim at that time, too.
• Even before they hatch, embryo American White Pelicans can peep and squawk to let their parents know that they are too hot or too cold.
